Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature 2011
Sanlam and Tafelberg have announced the names of the finalists in this year’s Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature. The following 18 finalists were selected from a total of 109 entries received this year. Authors were requested to submit stories in which hope play a role. All manuscripts were judged anonymously.
The finalists in the English category are:
- Jenny Robson, from Maun, Botswana
- Maya Fowler, from Cape Town
- Carolyn Morton, from Port Elizabeth
- Jayne Bauling, from White River
- Neil Malherbe, from Nelspruit
- Elizabeth Pienaar, from Johannesburg
The finalists in the Afrikaans category are:
- Celeste Slabber-Loriston, from Riversdale
- Annelie Ferreira, a South African currently living in Bristol, UK
- Derick van der Walt, from Pretoria
- Henriëtte Linde-Loubser, from Stellenbosch
- Nelia Engelbrecht, from Potchefstroom
- Gideon L. Strydom, from Sir Lowry’s Pass
African languages contenders are:
- Kabelo Duncan Kgatea (Sotho category: Setswana)
- David wa Maahlamela (Sotho category: Sesotho sa Leboa)
- Motimele Mabonchi Goodwill (Sotho category: Sesotho sa Leboa)
- Simphiwe Nolutshungu (Nguni category: isiXhosa)
- Bhekisigcino Damasius Khawula (Nguni category: isiZulu)
- Lungile Promise Zwane (Nguni category: isiZulu)
A gold prize of R12000 and silver prize (R6000) is at stake in each category.
The winners are to be announced at a function in Johannesburg during October 2012, and the prize-winning books will be available in bookshops and in e-book format from October 2012.
The Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature is awarded every second year. Tafelberg Publishers and competition sponsor Sanlam will host a workshop at the upcoming Woordfees, Stellenbosch, on 7 March, giving guidelines on writing an award-winning manuscript.
