Riana Scheepers

Biographical info

Wilhelmina Adriana (Riana) Scheepers was born in Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal on 9 December 1957. She matriculated at Vryheid High School in 1975. Thereafter, she completed a BA Degree in Communication, a BA Honours and a Masters’ Degree (Afrikaans) – all cum laude – at the University of the Free State. Since then, Riana has been a lecturer at the Universities of Zululand and Cape Town, an editor at Tafelberg Publishers and a teacher at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

In 1997 she completed her Doctorate in Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Cape Town.

Riana’s first published work was a volume of short stories in 1990 titled Die ding in die vuur, for which she was awarded the ATKV and FAK prizes. In 1992 she was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize for her second volume of short stories, Dulle Griet. Her books have been bestsellers ever since, both in South Africa and abroad.

Did you know?

  • Riana and Koos Prinsloo, the short story writer, were friends since their schooldays. Her thesis for her Doctorate was about his oeuvre.
  • In 2000 she was appointed as a member of the South African Academy of Science & Arts.
  • Since 2002 Riana has been a social advisor in the Dr Adri column in the magazine Huisgenoot.
  • She was the only South African poet who was invited to be part of the Flemish Government’s 30th anniversary on 11 July 2002, where 24 poets from the Dutch-speaking community read their poems in Parliament.
  • Her son, Adriaan Meyer, is a promising young playwright. His first drama, Prinsloo Versus (about Koos Prinsloo), received the Kanna Award at the KKNK in 2004.
  • The Dutch translation of Blinde sambok (Het schorpioenkind) was shortlisted for the 2004 Flemish Children’s Jury Prize.
  • The stage version of Die avonture van Wilde Willemientjie received the Kanna Award for best children’s production at the KKNK in 2006.
